Deleting notes question
« on: September 18, 2006, 01:45:59 pm »
Question...

When I delete a note off of a diagram, it still shows up in my rtf documentation.  How do I delete a note object from the model.  Notes don't show up in the project browser so I have no idea how to get rid of this item.

Thanks,
Jeff

No problem Jeff,

Just as with other elements - classes, states, etc. - you need to delete the note from the model and not just remove it from the elements displayed on your diagram.

The easy ways are to either:
  • Use control-delete, and answer the confirmation appropriately.
  • Select the note (or multiple notes) on your diagram (if you have not removed it as you have in the past) and from the main menu choose Edit / Delete Selected Element(s), or use the control-D hot key.
  • Right-click the note in the Project Browser tree, and choose Delete from the context menu.
All of the above work with any elements, not just notes.

But the note isn't in my browser tree.  So how do I Ctrl+Delete something that I can't even find in my model?

First make absolutely sure the note is not there. Remember that the Project Browser tree only shows items to a certain depth. You can 'deepen' it with the main panel of the Tools / Options dialog. Look at the two boxes at the bottom of the form.

If that does not work, try Tools / Data Management / Project Integrety Check. The hotkey is shift-F9. If there is a 'hanging' element this might either remove it from the database or make it visible.

Finally, be sure your report is actually being updated. Make some other obvious (but easily removed) change to the project and check that both the change and the note appear in your report.

If none of these work, report back and stay tuned. Perhaps someone else has some insights.

Nope, still can't see notes in my project browser.

I can select a note on a diagram, and if I go to menu "Element->Locate in project browser" nothing happens.

Come to think of it, I don't think notes appear in the Project Browser tree. They're specific to the diagram they are on.

What happened when you tried the integrity check?

Try running a "Find Orphans" search.  Press Ctrl+F to open the search dialog and select "Find Orphans".  Further filters can be applied by clicking the "Advanced" button (eg. set ObjectType to "Note").

David,
notes (and a few others) obviously are different. They are never ever in the project view and a simple delete removes them completely. So I guess this special orphan will not be found.

Try to run a sanity check on your model (Tools/Data Management/Integrity). Also just a guess :-/
