Duplicateing A Diagram
« on: December 13, 2006, 03:03:58 am »
In specific I've got a sequence diagram; there's too much information to put on a single diagram so i want to do a few that are very similar; is there a way to duplicate the whole thing as at present creating a new diagram then doing a copy and paste as link only pastes the objects/actors; it doesn't paste the messages and associated properties which means it's taking a very long time to duplicate the bits of the diagram that I have to duplicate.

Thanks in advance.

Christopher

Makes me think of the existing 'virtual document' feature ... you could do with an similar 'virtual diagram' which is based on an existing diagram, but with different visibility (etc.) settings. 'New feature' request ?

That sounds like an extremely sensible solution!

Instead of copying the elements on the diagram to a new diagram you can copy the whole diagram in one go.

Right click on the diagram in the tree and select 'Copy Diagram to Clipboard'.
Right click on the package you want to create a copy in.  Enter the new name, and I suspect you'll want a shallow copy.

I just tested this with a simple sequence diagram, and all relationships were copied.

Excellent, thank you; I was inside a use case and this element didn't allow me to "Paste Diagram" but that's excellent now i know will paste elsewhere then move.

Thanks

I would like to bring this topic back...
I have the same problem.. but the solution of copying the diagram as shallow doesn't work too well.. because it makes duplicates of the elements too. So then you have multiple copies of elements with the same name.

so.. what now? :)

What elements is it copying?  The whole point of the shallow copy is that it doesn't copy the elements, but only all the diagram information.

well why don't you give it a try?

Create a package to work in.
Create a new seq diagram.
Add in a couple life-lines and do some messages.
Now copy and paste this diagram into the same package, with some modified name.

After it's done, you will notice that whatever life-lines you put in, will be duplicated in the package. So when you do documentation and want to see how each obejct/lifeline is interacting, you will not see them in all diagrams.

Did anyone try this? Is there no answer? Is it a bug in EA?

Hi,
if you have good reasons for thinking this is a (reproducable) bug then use the Bug Report on the support page. What I read here really looks like that.
