Problem with links in generated documentation
« on: February 02, 2007, 01:06:27 am »
Hi,

I have generated documentation from a project with links to external document. They are shown as links but they are not active.

¿what is the possible problem?

Thanks a lot.

I believe the RTF generator, does not support displaying these links as "embedded" documents... You would need to use MS Word to do that...

e.g., Create your RTF documents, save them with a specific name & location. Then create a MS Word document, embedded the documents as "sub-documents" (Word has good help to guide you through that process... or just Google).

Then when you open the word document, "expand" the links and there ya go!  Remember though Word will try and SAVE the RTFs as DOC, when you save the master document, so ALWAYS answer NO, when prompted to save the RTF sub-documents in another format... IF you answer YES, then the embedded links will be broken... because you will be generating RTF files, and the embedded links will be expecting DOC files...

Hope that helps somewhat!

hi again,
only a question:
I don´t understand really good what "expand links" means.

I follow your steps but the links do not work.

In MS Word, the master document could look like this (when viewed under "Outline" view)...
==============================================
Some text like this…..

Then the embedded link… on the next line

C:\Documents and Settings\drains\Desktop\TestDocument.rtf
==============================================

Then...
Expand or collapse subdocuments
On the View menu, click Outline.
On the Outlining toolbar, click Expand Subdocuments  or Collapse Subdocuments .

Word automatically adds "Section Breaks" before and after a sub-document, you should delete these as they will interfere with your layout... To do this... click that "backword P" like character to view paragraph formatting symbols... then you see something like this...

Some text like this…..===========Section Break (Next Page)========

Then the embedded link… on the next line

This is a test... ===========Section Break (Continuous)========

Delete those section breaks, and then the formatting should be like you expect!
