What's the fastest way to add a new message to a sequence diagram? Can I drag a message out on to the drawing from somewhere I'm now aware of. Takes me three movements now and one of them hurts my wrist?

Not sure exactly what process you are currently using, but the easiest way to create a new message on a sequence diagram is by using the quicklinker feature.  Simply click on the lifeline near where you wish to start the message, then click and drag thie small up-arrow icon next to the lifeline to the target lifeline.
