How to copy / paste packages?
« on: May 09, 2007, 04:50:29 am »
Hi,

How could as use a kind of Copy / Paste in EA because we have created a new root where all important models are available as "template" and we would just want to copy the package and paste it somewhere else.

Thank you in advance.

A copy and paste of packages can be achieved with an XMI export and then XMI import with 'strip guids' enabled.

Thank you for the answer. This is the solution we were already looking for.

Why do we need to use an export / import knowing that EA is GUI oriented?

You need to use an export/import because EA doesn't provide a copy/paste of packages.

Do you know Instant Water? No? It's one of the most ingenious inventions of mankind. If you ever happen to need water, just take a spoonfull of Instant Water, add a little water and you're done! And where do you get the water from? Well, just a spoonfull of Instant Water ...

Copy and paste of packages should be native and within the GUI.  I mean you can do a shallow or deep copy of diagrams no trouble.

Sparx could just automate their XMI export / import code under the covers.

A practical reason to do the above is we have a project and application package template we want domain architects to use when they catalogue new applications into the enterprise architecture.  Solutions architects use the project template for new projects.

Having copy and paste on packages is UI consistency (a good thing).

Re: instant water, I prefer to take mine dehydrated as it doesn't add weight to an already fat body :-)

Cheers,
David.

Hi david,

We do have the same reason (application package template) it is why I posted the question.

I have sent a Feature Request to the Sparx Team. Hope they will evaluate it as a potential new feature for a next release.
