Please Help: Cannot see stereotypes
« on: September 09, 2007, 08:35:09 pm »
Hello All,

I am new to EA having previously used Rational Rose. I have gone through the help as well as searched for my solution on this forum, but was unable to get an answer. I hope someone will be able to guide me through the same.

What I am after, is to display stereotypes on my diagram. For example, the use case has *worker*, *internal worker* and *case worker*. Each of these types have a different image (as per the help file) and once I select an actor, and change stereotype inside the <Properties> context menu, to say, "internal worker" the image should change to reflect as displayed in the help file.

But, I am unable to change the image. The actor looks the same, the only change I can see is in the properties windows where it displays <<internal worker>> Actor 1. But I want to see the image of an internal worker, as mentioned in the help file.

How do I change how the image will be reflected in my diagram as per change in stereotype? Any guidance will be deeply appreciated.

Thank you once again.

Truly,

PS: I have even tried changing the settings in the Diagram menu, the Element menu, the Options menu as well as the Settings -> UML -> image menu, but no effect. I understand that these images of *internal workers*, *case workers* etc are internal to EA, and need not be obtained from external files. I use EA v7 build 813.

Try applying the stereotype to a class instead of an actor (Or an object if you prefer).  To show the stereotype for classes you will need to check Tools | Options | Classes honor analysis stereotypes.

PS.  I don't know if the 813 help file is the same as the 816 version.  But http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/EAUserGuide/index.html?worker.htm makes it clear that these stereotypes are for classes.

Hello Simonm,

Your solution was PERFECT. It works when I am in the CLASS view and not the USE CASE View. Thank you for your help. The .813 manual ALSO mentions the same, but I did not really digest it as the same looked so familiar to use case actors, PLUS rational allowed these types of diagram images in use cases also.

Thank you for your help. Best Regards.

However,

On further notice, it IS SUPPOSED to be possible. If you open the help file .816 will do, move to index and type in:

Stereotypes, Inbuilt

you will see stereotypes of business cases as well as actors!

The title says: Business Modeling Stereotypes and the descriptions says

"This diagram shows the range of inbuilt stereotyped icons for business modeling. These include business stereotypes for classes and objects, as well as one for actors and two for use cases. "

And you will see new images for USe cases actors and business cases.

Thanks for your help though.

Regards,

You can still apply those images to use case diagrams.  You just need to create classes to do so.  But those stereotypes definately aren't intended to be applied to actors or use cases.

The one that applies to an actor is a 'business actor'.  I think there may be an error in the help file saying that there is two for use cases. 'business use case' does, but 'business use-case realization' doesn't apply to use cases though.  It actually applies to a collaboration.

That error has now been corrected, and the text adjusted to make it clear which stereotype applies to which element type. That is:

This diagram shows the range of inbuilt stereotyped icons for business modeling. These include business stereotypes for Classes and Objects, as well as one each for Actors (Business Actor),  Use Cases (Business Use Case) and Collaborations (Business Use Case Realization).

The changes should wash through to the product Help (but not necessarily the web help) for release 817.

Thank you for your assistance. I already did the business actor and business use case, but was losing sleep over business use-case realization.

Also, I found out that selecting and actor, right clicking properties, changing stereotype to "business actor" and clicking on APPLY or OK button DOES NOT WORK. In fact, that was the problem. The workaround is that after typing in "business actor" in the stereotype box, you should press the ENTER key. That is why the business actor was not showing and my questions in the first place. I discovered this purely by accident. However, as I am using version .813, I assume it must be solved in future versions.
