Running EA from a USB key
« on: October 23, 2007, 12:28:36 am »
Very few of my clients want me using my own machine on their network. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to run EA as a portable app?

Cheers,
b

There was some discussion of this recently. I do not remember what the eventual answer was.

Search the forum, and look for USB as a keyword.
No, you can't have it!

looks like it doesn't work very well.

Also, I run EA Pro (+eclipse), not lite.

Well, there you have it.

Perhaps you could somehow copy the registry tree to a target machine, then run off the key. You'd likely have to ensure the same installation drive on every machine, requiring some synchronization of USB drive letters. And it would be appropriate to seek some kind of permission from Sparx.

Even if you could manage the above, I don't hold out too much hope.

Perhaps you could convince a client to purchase a small number of floating licenses. The client could then lease these to contractors for short periods of time. Once such a lease expired the license would revert to the client's pool, and become available internally.

I spend most of my time working with ActionScript projects.

Unfortunately, very few of the other AS programmers I come across have a good enough grasp of OOP (let alone UML) and have little or no idea what they'd do with EA.

I may have to use my own license and install/uninstall as I move from job to job. I'm currently using a combination of offline laptop, usb key, and the occasional trial version. Far from ideal and a shame - it's the only essential part of my environment that isn't portable.
