EA on Linux - no Tricks!
« on: November 05, 2007, 05:21:54 pm »
Howday,

Recently have moved my dev. environment from Mac OS X to Ubuntu Linux.  Ubuntu is really starting to shine as a desktop-replacement, dev-env.  Anyhow, I use EA as a modeling tool often.  I'm happy to report that it works out of the box with the latest Wine w/o all the convoluted steps and additional software packages you need to purchase -- listed on the EA guide to installing on linux.

There are some set-backs -- it is slower, and a little clunkier, but it seems to work fine.   I didn't do anything special to get it to work.

I installed wine with apt-get.  I ran the EA .exe installer.  First time, all I saw was splash screen.  After a reboot, I tried again, and the app came up, created a new model, made some new diagrams, saved it, etc.  Have not exercised it much, but this is pretty cool news.

Hope it helps somebody!

Regards,
Davis

Now that is good news.

I have installed EA 7 on Fedora 8 on top of Crossover for Linux with success.

The only problem is that the first line of text (in a note for example) displays correctly but subsequent lines show up *above* the first line (rather than below) - the third above the second, et cetera...

Sometimes, the text within an object - like the name of a class or of a process - does not display in the centre of the object, but near the top - or even *above* the top of the object (it is invisible until I double-click on the object).

Michel, it sounds like you are using the Windows installer rather than the WINE installer.  Those display errors should not be happening when running EA under Crossover.

If installing the WINE edition of EA doesn't help, then it's probably worth sending in a support query.

There was a recent thread with exactly the same problematic. Worth to put it into FAQ

I used the CrossOver installer "Install Windows Application" which I pointed towards the file I downloaded from Sparx - which is 'easetupfull.exe'

Did you mean there is a different file to download?

Yes, there is a different file to download.

http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/support/faq/ea_on_linux.html talks a little about this and http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/registered/reg_ea_down.html contains the link to the linux download.

Solved: EA on Linux - no Tricks!

I had blindly followed the link on the email sent by the store.

Everything fixed by the 'linux' download.

Thank you!
