How to disable user security?
« on: November 30, 2007, 04:14:27 am »
Hello,

I have a project, that I want to give to a consultant, who has the EA reader only.

How can I disable user security in the copy that he will get, so that he can read the model?

Hi Uwe,

I'm guessing here, but perhaps this will work. First, make a copy of the project. You can do this via Project Transfer if you use a DBMS.

Now try disabling user security on the copy (with nothing else open in EA). Does that do what you need?

If that doesn't work, try disabling user security on your main model (or a copy), then doing a project transfer to an EAP file. Does that file now work?

Please let us know. This sounds like something others could run into.

Well, I did make a copy from the postgres repository
to an ea file and want to disable user security there.

But how can I do that?

With which menue command?

If I click on projects -> security -> enable security...
the program asks for an authorization key, but nothing
happens (no error message or warning, just security stays
enabled).

Found it!

One of the administrator permissions in EA is to Enable/Disable security. Doubtless you'll need to have administrator permissions to even see this function. And to make things even more obscure, this is not really documented in the Build 818 help file on the download site. [That file is an issue that Sparx is aware of, so I expect improvement soon.]

Not sure what is happening here.

When you enable security, you enter the authorization key and click on OK - that creates an admin user with every access right there is, including Security Enable/Disable. You log on as Admin and assign users and groups. Security Enable/Disable is right there in the list of access rights that can be assigned to users or user groups. You could assign it to anyone if you felt so inclined, but you probably wouldn't!

To turn security off, the admin user with the Security Enable/Disable access rights clicks on the Project | Enable Security menu option and again enters the authorization key and clicks on OK.  The system should display a prompt, telling you that security is disabled and to close and open the project again. You don't actually need to do that; security has been disabled, and the menu option is greyed out. (You would close and open the project to get the option available again.)

It would be better to copy the secured project and then turn security off in the copy. That way you only do one security switch rather than turning security off in the master, leaving it unsecured while you copy it, and then turning security back on again.

I have tweaked the Help to make things a little easier to understand. I don't know why the security disabled message isn't displaying; if Uwe does not have access rights to turn security off, he shouldn't be seeing the authorization prompt in the first place.

Well, I didn't enter the security key again.
I thought, it would be needed only to enable security, and admin rights would be sufficient to disable it.

So - apart from the help file content - the only little bug is, that there is no message "wrong or missing security key" if no security key was entered and you try to disable the security system.

Please report that to Sparx in a bug report Uwe.
