Where are Linked Documents
« on: November 13, 2006, 09:34:06 am »
Greetings All-

Ok, I looked at Help and did a search of the forum and could not find a susbstantive answer to the following two inter-related questions:

1. Is there a way to indicate in the Project Browser whether an element has a Linked Document (created with the ctrl+alt+d method)?

2. Where do these Linked Documents reside so that they can be easily browsed without going to the element and hitting ctrl+alt+d?

Thanks!
newGuy

As far as I know, there is no way to show the existence of linked document.

IMHO these documents are in eap file or database in table T_DOCUMENT.

hi newGuy,

1) AFAIK there is no way to mark elements with linked documents in the project browser. You should post your idea under "Suggestions and Requests".

I mark elements with linked documents with the stereotype "LiDo". I addition a created an appropriate image with the image manager (see: settings - images...)

2) Linked documents are stores in a zipped format and so their contants is hard (or impossible) to find in the database or an XML-export.

Are there changes to 7.0 that address this issue?

I don't believe this has changed, at least not as far as the Project Browser is concerned.

I'm not absolutely sure of this, so...

You can find the release notes for each version of EA in the Latest News section. There is also a cumulative release notes page on the Sparx Web site. It is here: http://www.sparxsystems.com/products/ea_history.html

Thanks Midnight!  After a search of the release notes I have to say I think you're right about it not changing :(

You could always start a new thread about this in the Suggestions section. Perhaps now that version 7.0 is out they will think about including this feature in 7.1.

A best practice we (the forum community) use is to start such a thread for a feature request or bug report. Once the thread is started, we issue a 'formal' version to Sparx directly. You will find the necessary links by looking for Feature Request or Report a Bug under the Support link at the bottom of any forum page. [In this case it would be the feature request, of course, but the protocol is the same.]

When you send the request to Sparx, please quote the title of your forum thread, and paste in the URL. This gives Sparx  a link, which they can use to gauge community support, and to participate in any ensuing discussion.

It would also be nice if the date/time last modified for the element would refresh when a linked document is updated - this currently doesn't seem to be happening.

FYI:

"Version 7.0 Build 813

Shapescript Changes
Added "hasLinkedDocument" property to allow visual indicator for elements with linked documents.  "

Doesn't help with the project browser, but at least it's something.

I have the same problem with finding linked documents since I use them for describing central design decisions. My workaround is to add a tagged value to any element which has a linked document attached. You just need to have the tagged value tab enabled when you select your diagram elements in order to find linked documents.
