How to create a message without the "( )"

I am trying to create a sequence diagram but I cannot create a message between two objects that doesn't have the "(" and ")" appended to the message name!

I see examples of this everywhere in the EA documentation. For example, in the Layout of Sequence Diagrams help topic, the screenshot there shows a message of simply "1.1" being send between objects B and D.

Any ideas?

never mind.. I found the associated option on the diagram properties.
