Show Level Numbering - How does it work?
« on: April 28, 2008, 08:39:24 pm »
I am trying to assign fixed numbering to Packages within my project.  The EA help suggests using the Package Context Menu which is found when right clicking on a Package, and then selecting 'Show Level Numbering'.  I have done this but no numbering shows, and is not shown when creating RTF's.

I need to be able to communicate Packages, and other elements to my client that are fixed, i.e. as a reference number that will remain over time.  They will receive the documentation via RTF's (or web) and I would like to have the numbering/references reflected in the documentation and not as a siigned by Microsoft Word which can change on each export.

Can anybody help?

Thanks

D

Hi Damo,
Show Level Numbering - add a sequence number to each element in the package (not the package itself), based on the element's position in the package hierarchy
This works properly however that indicates the elements inside the packages.

Ah!  Now I'm looking at the elements I can see what it's doing.  Unfortunately I don't think this is going to help me but at least I know not to waste any more time on this particular feature.  Thanks for letting me know.

Do you know any other way to assign a unique reference at package level that can be used as onwards communication to customers?  As a team we're working in an Agile environment and have broken down the full system (self-serve solution) into managable modules of work.  These functional components, which we aim to deliver as separate work packages, are to be communicated to the customer(s) via a Spreadsheet which will effectively act as a deliverables roadmap.  What we don't want to have to do is maintain both a spreadsheet and an EA model.  Once we export the first CSV for the spreadsheet, provide the numeration, then subsequent exports need to maintain the unique numbering of the previous export.

Having used EA for a while I still haven't figured out the 'best-practise' way to do this.  I would assume this to be fairly common whatever the method, Agile or otherwise, i.e. the use of a deliverables roadmap where changing requirements or priorities need to be communicated outside EA?

Thanks again

Damian

Hi Damian,
The first thing that comes to my mind would be numbering the packages manually, using numeration like 1, 1.1, 1.1.1 before the name of the package (properties). If the project is not too large that should take no more than a minute...Perhaps there are other ways to do it automatically, but you would have to waste more time to find it  ;)
