object flow to different components
« on: June 21, 2008, 03:43:17 am »
I have created several component diagrams with the same objects flowing to different components using "information flow".  Is there a way to find out which components my objects are flowing to and in which diagrams I can find them in.  The search and advanced serach tool does not seem to be helping.  Thanks

Have you tried the hierarchy and matrix views?
No, you can't have it!

I'm not exactly sure how the Hierachy would work for what I am trying to do.  But I did try the matrix view and that did not help.  I was able to get the matrix view to show me that there is information flow between certain components, but I could not figure out how many times a particular object was flowing to different components across all the diagrams.  I am a beginner with Enterprise Architect, so this could be the reason why I am not able to figure this out.

For Clarity, this is exactly what I am looking for.  I created 4 component diagrams with information flow.  I dragged and dropped each component i made into all the diagrams as a simple link.  Then i created a list of classes.  All the components have information flow, so i right clicked the information flow line, then clicked "advanced", then "information items conveyed", then "add" to add all the objects.  So my specific question is, after i add all these objects to the information flow among all the components across the 4 diagrams, how do i do a simple search and find out where the objects are flowing to and from, and in which diagram to find it.  So, i never actually dragged and dropped any of the classes, i only added them by right clicking the the information flow line, then advanced, information items conveyed, and then add.  Thus, when i run a search for the objects, it only shows me the original classes i created, but there is no information about which particular information flow line i added them to.

I think I've got the picture now.

Off hand I just don't know. My gut feel is that you should be able to create a search to give you this information - perhaps in two stages or parts, perhaps in only one. That said, I cannot think of where to start. [That's partly because my mind's elsewhere, and partly because I don't have your specific situation in front of me. It does not mean that the problem is intractable.]

Have you tried building a custom search? [Remember that it is easier to start with a copy of a 'canned' search, then tweak things.]
