Generated Image / Diagram Sizing
« on: July 08, 2008, 04:33:24 am »
Greetings
I'm new to EA but have used modeling tools before.

Using version 6.5 build 801 because that's whats "approved" by Corporate...

I'm having trouble controling the drawing size and page size.  Our usual practice here is to generate drawings for Arch E paper, generate a jpg file, run it over to the local print shop (FedX/Kinkos) and have it printed.  In other words, we don't have a plotter.

After a morning's futzing with it, I finally got it to show me an Arch E page layout by installing a plotter driver, setting it to the default printer (critical!), and setting Arch E sized paper (EA insists I have A3 paper every time I start it up) but I keep telling it "Hey stupid it's a plotter it has a roll of paper..." and I understand that Windows Printer Drivers are notoriously buggy and cantankerous...

If you choose diagram / save as image you don't get an image that size unless you place an object at the lower right of the page.

There's no relationship between page size and image size and drawing size.  Visio may be junk but it does do that well... But I digress...

If I do a Diagram / Layout Diagram IT RESETS THE SAVE AS IMAGE SIZE AND THE DIAGRAM SIZE.

So basically I can get:
  A diagram I can print.
  Unless I do layout diagram.
In which case I get something that is useless.

For example, I reverse engineered our main database, selected all the tables, did auto layout... And I got a diagram that was 145 inches wide and 11 inches high -- on Arch E paper that's 38 inches by 44 inches.  How's that supposed to work?

It can't be this bad... can it?  Is there some other way to contol page size, image size?  Is there a "please don't change the size of the paper in my printer option?"

Would very much appreciate any advice...

Thanks in Advance

What I can tell you is that there was an issue identified where diagram layout increased the page size.  This has been fixed (but only in version 7.1).

You may also be interested to know that the latest build has options to scale up the images saved to file, so that you get a better image quality.

None of this really helps you, since you're on version 6.5, but that's where things are at as far as I know.

How would one scale up the image in version 7.1? Thanks.

From Build 831, go to Tools | Options | Diagram, and set 'Scale Saved Bitmaps to'.

If you are using RTF reporting - then set the diagram properties:
Diagram Tab | RTF report Option | Divide Diagram into Multiple Pages

Hi,

I've a problem with this... I exported a diagram without the scaling. The saved bitmap was filled from top left to bottom right.

Then I set the scaling to 400% and saved the diagram... which then only was printed into the top left corner of the saved bitmap... the rest of the bitmap was empty...

The size of the bitmap did not change... in both cases it was 5195x2307 pixels.

Is there any way to bypass this stupid "cut into pages" thing and implement a straightforward "save to bitmap" as anyone working in the business would expect it?!? It's one of the features that would be the most interesting when you don't want to pass EALite to your clients and simply send them a jpg with the entire diagram in a clearly readable manner...

Have fun,
Stefan

Has there been any progress on this? Where can we get a glimpse at the stuff that will be treated or bugfixed?!?

I can save a diagram of any size as a bitmap, scaling works properly and it's not limited to any page size.

Have you sent an email to sparx support?  I haven't seen one, and I didn't previously see your post.

PS.  This forum is NOT how to let Sparx Systems know about any problem you are having.  If you want to make sure that Sparx Systems knows about it, the forms in the support section of the website need to be used.

Hi,

I reported this problem via the registered support form. I'll try to mail you 4 pngs:

2 with "zoom to best scale" enable (100% and 400%)
2 with "zoom to best scale" disable (100% and 400%)

I'm working with the latest version of EA.

To be honest, this is not the first time that we (the users) request a better diagram to bitmap feature. This forum has multiple topics about this. I don't think that if we post here, it's intended to offend you, but to discuss what is actually happening when we use the software you programmed. If we discuss a feature and we discover that the feature is not working as expected, we will (and have done so) send a request via the appropriate forms.

Nevertheless... this being an official Sparx Forum and given that you (and your co-workers) read and reply to topics on this forum, one might think that you catch a problem, if it is stated in the forum, even if you don't have a bug report in your email account asap.

Don't get me wrong... EA is a great software. I have selected (and promoted it to my clients) after evaluating a dozen of different UML tools (which support code round-trip; a great EA feature). And I really don't regret it!

Have fun,
Stefan
