Using Enterprise with Local Intranet's
« on: December 17, 2008, 02:52:10 am »
Hi there, apologies if this is in the wrong area - I'm a newbie  :)

My organisation has seen this software in use and we are interested in using it.

We are looking for a solution that will enable our staff to dynamically navigate through processes on their intranet (e.g. when clicking on the top level, it navigates you to the next level).

Our web team can do it now using Visio and hotspots in the web software, but of course we would like to get away from Visio and was hoping to find a solution that would also get us away from using hotspots.

Will Enterprise Architect do this for us?

Short answer: Yes.

We once had a system overview which was based on Visio and HTML export, too- including linked documents to specifications inside a document management system. It proved to be too much of a hazzle to keep everything in synch- for each new product cycle we had to provide updated Visio diagrams, link with new document versions, etc.

EA has improved this a lot. Since we are now modelling (or start to) the whole system and product in EA the system overview is just a side effect of the modelling work. A frequent HTML export onto the intranet shows the current state to the stakeholders.

Another benefit: Using VISIO diagrams one can show anything with anything. That means there is no support for a coordinated and organised structure- a diagram might show functional, static and structural elements and mixes this with parameters in a non- standardized way hard to read by others.

It still requires some discipline to accomplish what you want to see plus a steep learning curve (not for the tool but for the processes behind) but it is worth the efforts.
