7.5 Compatibility
« on: February 21, 2009, 01:42:22 am »
Is there a list of expected compatibility of 7.5 with earlier versions? Can 7.5 save models to be compatible with older versions? Can older versions read and modify 7.5 models?

There's nothing 'official' that I know of, but based on past experience, working with build 840, and what documentation is available...

Don't know, yes, and yes.

For the last two there may be limitations for earlier versions of EA. It should work with EA 7.x, probably 6.x. Expect some issues regarding the Audit function. [Sparx has said that this will be turned on by default in some (unspecified) future version, so that might be the new default. Older versions of EA might fail to open such models, but 7.x should have no problem.]

Note that there are small tweaks to the EA schema from time to time. This might result in some 'drift' in project structure, particularly in DBMS repositories. It would be best to keep backup copies of your models for long enough to ensure there is no data loss. AFAIK this would most likely show up in fields being truncated, but how that might appear to a user is anyone's guess.

I have 7.1 and 7.5 installed and there has been no issues using the two versions on the same saved model file (EAP).

The only issue of compatibility between 7.1 and 7.5 that I am aware of is that if you are using the new business rules functionality then that data will be lost during XMI round trip in 7.1.

There should be no issues with general loading saving of a model, including concurrent access.
