Automated hierarchical numbering of requirements
« on: March 10, 2009, 05:45:44 pm »
Hi, I need to name functional and non-functional requirements in a way that they also show hieararchy (using numbers after names for that). It is possible to do it manually, but i'm sure there is a way to do that automatically. Can somebody help me?

Hi Artak,

You can setup a 'flat' auto numbering style for new requirement elements in the Settings->Auto Name Counters dialog. To see hierarchical numbering you can switch on 'Show Level Numbering' on the package containing the requirements, but these aren't part of the requirement elements name.

You might want to look at the help file on using "Show Level Numbering" for a package 1.1.1 numbering.

Package numbering only, though, right? Not numbering of actual requirement elements.

Thinking about this request however - most projects have lots and lots of requirements - so having a multi-level numbering scheme applied to the level of atomic requirement elements may create a numbers so long, it may be unwieldy. Or ugly.

Dermot,
Thanks for a hint but It allows to see hierarchical numbering only in project browser not on diagrams. I'm writing a Request For Proposal for a software and need to cross reference it with software requirements file. That's the reason why I need numbering.
