How to retain Class part layout in Object?
« on: March 21, 2009, 01:40:22 am »
Hi!

I've got a Class with a number of Parts, carefully laid out graphically. When I create an Object of this Class (drag - Paste as Instance - Include Embedded Elements) the Object has all the Parts, but the graphic layout is lost.

I'm modelling hardware, things like 48-port switches. Kinda don't want to have to redo the layout in each Object. :)

Anyone got a workaround? Or a far far better way of modelling hardware?

Underneath that "Include Embedded Elements" checkbox is a radio button "Based on instance". Use that to keep your chosen layout intact.

Hey, what do you know. That works. Maybe I should try all options before asking silly questions... :-[

Thanks!

Umm... Here's a thing.

If my Class contains not Parts but inner Classes, I don't get the option of Including Embedded Elements. Only the "shell" Class (or Object) is created.

But if I add a dummy Part to the Class, I do get the option - and all the inner Classes are copied and laid out correctly.

Is this by design, or a bug?

Sounds like an error of omission.

I'd report it, in the hope that the situation could be either resolved or explained before 7.5 hits production.
No, you can't have it!
