No difference with WAN optimizer?
« on: April 15, 2009, 06:11:31 am »
We just got the WAN optimizer *seemingly* working and we are not seeing any kind of performance difference.

My Setup:
EA 7.5 build 843
MySQL EA Database 1000 miles away
WAN optimizer running on my local machine.

EA appears to be connected (It says it is connected to the optimizer in the lower right hand corner of EA and routing through localhost:4242).

However to edit/create/everything. it takes about the same amount of time to do anything as my cube neighbor who is connecting without using the optimizer.

Is there anyway to tell if 1.  I have it setup properly (The docs don't line up with the actual tool, and it looks like some of the diagnostics capabilities were removed from the optimizer).  And 2.  Isolate the problem.

I read that people noticed a 3 to 8 times performance boost.  I am not noticing any type of boost.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

With your current deployment (the WANOptimizer running on the same machine as EA), you will witness no improvement in EA performance.

The WAN Optimizer improves WAN performance by acting as a proxy to EA, making DBMS queries on its behalf, compressing the results and sending them back to EA. Therefore for any performance improvement, the WAN Optimizer must be on a faster link to the DBMS than your client instance of EA (eg. On the same LAN, or even the same machine, as the DBMS).

These concepts should be explained in Chapter 1 of the WAN Optimizer User Guide (see in particular the deployment diagram provided), however if you do not feel they are clear enough we are more than happy to review them.

PS: If you are looking to use the WAN Optimizer in a production environment, we'd highly reccomend you upgrade to EA build 844, which ironed out a few bugs pertaining to the WAN Optimizer.
