three diagram questions
« on: April 20, 2009, 11:13:02 pm »
Hi all,

I have a couple of questions that I can't find answers for:

1. Can I add graphic objects to a class diagram, eg just lines or circles that are not elements?
2. When I add an element to a diagram, if it has a superclass its superclass is shown at the top right just above the element name. Can I suppress the display of the superclass's name?
3.  This is really a report question... When elements are listed in a report, is there a way to list for each element the diagrams that the element appears in.  I can't see this anywhere in the basic templates.

thanks,
John

Hi'ya

As no one else has answered this...

Nopes ya' can'na draw lines and shapes that aren't elements. You can have rectangles (boundary elements) and vague circles if unnamed use cases is cool.

As far as I know, unlucky you hey... the superclass stays.  But I'm thinking if ya gonna be scribbling shapes and lines; then just leave superclass unstated... [smiley=cheesy.gif]it's hardly going to detract from the visual confusion.

My bosses just wouldn't believe any report we produced consequently... but it wouldn't be 'model element' it would be 'diagram element' containing 'diagram item' referencing the model element [smiley=evil.gif] with some manual post action to remove our vague circles and Subject-squares (with some clever Z organsation you can have lines... perhaps we should put in a feature request for borderless comment elements and more diversity in comment anchor lines).

Can I ask why you want the element on diagram Listing?

Hi
thanks for the answers.

1
re graphic elements on a diagram - I wanted to be able to put some markers, like a line or an arrow or other symbol or scribbly thing, on a diagram to draw attention to some aspects of the diagram.  So text notes appears to be the only way to do it. then.  (Id rather not co-opt 'real' elements for the purpose, as that would clutter up the browser, be listed in reports and so on.)

2
So, it seems then that the superclass (or superclasses if using multiple inheritance) is always displayed.  It would be useful if there were an option to turn it on or off, and perhaps per diagram.

3
I have about 200 classes, and about 15 diagrams to explain different aspects of the model, instead of one or two large but unfathomable (and unprintable)  diagrams.  Any element might appear on several diagrams.  In a model report that lists the definitions and the associations of each element, it would be useful to also list the names of all diagrams that the element appears on, so that the reader can easily look back at the diagrams to understand its participations in various aspects.

thanks,
John

Unfortunately, not per diagram.

What about the "Show additional parents" option in the "Diagram" tab of the diagram properties dialog?
