Create entry in Recent repositories through API?

When you open a repository through the UI, it appears in the list of recently opened repositories on the home page.

Is it possible to create an entry in the Recent list through the API?  I know it's possible to create an entry by directly editing the registry, but that solution is not very future-proof.
