copy and paste a diagram
« on: July 12, 2009, 12:23:07 pm »
I am a newby and I want to copy a diagram from one project to another. I found the copy on the context menu but I can not find the paste.

I wanted to open more than one project at the time. But couldn't find a solution. So I opened EA two times to make the copy and paste possible. But no paste found.

No, this will not work at all. Since the elements on the diagram don't exist in the new project, EA has nothing to work with.

Perhaps you could export the package containing the diagram and import in into the new project. You would do this via the XMI functions of EA. Note that any elements that do not belong to the package (tree) that you transfer will not be created in the new project. You can find more information by searching (way back) in the forum. [Hint: don't try using the search box at the upper right; use the Search button on the left side of a forum page.]

[edit]See Simon's post below for an excellent alternative.[/edit]

No, you can't have it!

You can also save your diagram as a pattern that can be used in your other model.

This has multiple advantages over exporting to XMI.  Including that you are not exporting a package (so have everything on the diagram and nothing else) and that you can selectively merge the pattern into the elements already in the other model.
