Mixed Use Case and Requirements RTF output?
« on: July 21, 2009, 05:47:58 pm »
Hi,

I'm still exploring the depths of EA :). I have now created a few models, including use cases and requirements.

The requirements base on certain use cases. Is it possible to generate a template and thus a document that shows and describes a use case and then its linked requirements alternatively? This is much easier to understand especially for the customer than having both in separated documents/sections.

I imagine the following:

Use case 1
Requirements 1-5

Use case 2
Requirements 6-10

... and so on.

Thanks,

Jan

Hi ebeb,

the easiest way to reach your goal is to move requirements into use cases (via Project browser). However, you'd lose structure of your requirements model.  :-/
Better way is to link req's and UC's (for ex. by Realize link). You can display set of links to RQ's below each UC.
The third possibility is to make mapping diagram (req's-UC's), it could be easier for the customer to understand.

Hi Kosmo!

Thanks for your reply. Actually I intended to use the third method. But just for the record: how would I use the realize link? Isn't it the same as using a mapping diagram? Or is it possible to create links without having a graphial representation that can be used in the RTF template/output?

Cheers,

Jan

Jan, sure it is possible to have links without graphical representation. You can easily view them in window "Relationships" (under "More windows" in View menu) - works when an element is selected.

You can either create a mapping diagram and leave it aside (not showing it to anyone), or create a link on a diagram and delete one of linked elements from that diagram - that doesn't mean that a connector is deleted as well. E.g. drag UC to req diagram, create a link, delete UC from req diagram.
This can be confusing, you need to keep up your model precisely  :)

I used the relationship matrix to create some links. How can I include them into my template?

I couldn't find any appropriate section or field in the template editor. Could you please give an advice? :)

Thanks,

Jan

It's a good idea to use relationship matrix  :)
You can find links under Package-Element-Connector. This should include links of any type, no matter how were they created.
(Anyway, EA rtf generator is somewhat weird, my colleagues use self-made plug-ins, I prefer HTML documentation.)

Thank Kosmo,

I will try that.

Funny what you say about the RTF generator, maybe you and your colleagues would like to vote to emphasize the request:

Hi Kosmo,

I followed your suggestion, and it works. I get the linked requirements included in my use case document.

But I additionally, I get ALL other connectors included in my documents. That means every single association between actors and use cases is included in the document.

But I found a way exclude all other connectors by using RTF Editor->Document Options->Exclude Connector Type

I selected "All" and then manually deselected only "Realization".

Now, only my Requirements will be shown. Wonderful  ::)
