Master Documents and (Model) Document re-use
« on: September 29, 2009, 01:18:11 am »
I think I may be missing something here.

What I would like to do is include a model document, let's say a "Project Background" section into multiple master documents in the spirit of define it once and use it multiple times.

However I don't see to be able to achieve this because the model documents for a master document are contained in the master document "package".  I can get my first model document Project Background to appear in my second master document definition - if I copy as a simple link and have "Show linked items in package" ticked,  but I can't reorder the sections of the second Master Document because the link isn't shown in the Project Browser.

What am I missing ?
thanks
G.

I think I may have worked out how to do this.

The key seems to be to create a separate package for each section you want to re-use in different documents.   Each package will contain only one element - a document artifact for the section in question.  For example create a package "Project Background - Write-up" and create a document of the same name.

Then within the master document definition add a model document called "Project Background".  Drag the package "Project Background - Write-up"  onto the model document and you're done.

Each time you create a new master document and want to re-use a previous section, create a model document within the master document definition as a container and drag the pacjage where the actual write-up is onto that model document.

Apologies if this was blindingly obvious to everyone - it wasn't to me.
