Matrix information and comprehensive documentation
« on: November 14, 2009, 12:56:57 am »
All,

How do you get a matrix "published" easily to make it accessible to "the general public" in a company ...  :-/

In case: I have an Enterprise Data model (also Cannonical data model/Business Information model) and I have a logical data model of an ODS implementing that EDM/BIM.

I used a matrix profile to connect/map which ODS tables implement what EDM entities. (In the matrix create "UML realisation" relationships from source "ODS" to target "EDM").

Now, publish the content of the EDM to either an rtf report or an html report.

==> Apparently there is no way of publising the matrix content along with the rest, being the EDM or the ODS model.

How can this be done?

Notes:
(1) exporting the matrix to CSV and then try all kinds of manual interventions (e.g. using MS Excel) is one, but complex solution that requires to also manually edit the html report: far too labor intensive, not transparent, errorprone, etc.
(2) printing the matrix in case to paper: 224 pages: readibility is approx. zero, and how will one integrate that with an intranet-accessible version of the HTML report?
(3) EA Lite: nice, but it requires corporate IT to install the tool at the users'. That is a non-standard request, therefore lengthy, expensive, inadequate. In addition it would require (business) users to be trained on reading models, and finding relevant information. Ruled out.
(4) when creating an rtf report, underneath each entity/class/table there is an unreadible table with all kinds of relationships ... This is not user-friendly enough for the intended audience, and even smart guys need to sift through too much "information" sifting for the proper bit ...

So: looking for a friendly  ;D manner to publish the matrix e.g. in a tabular format, ideally in an integrated manner with publishing the remainder of the information, either in rtf and/or html ...

Thanks for any tips!  ;)

Not sure this will work for large matrices,  but we take screenshots of them and create diagrams to hold them prior to generating documents.   Manual and anything but dynamic,  but works after a fashion.
