Need your thoughts on backup strategies
« on: December 15, 2009, 01:44:45 am »
Hey all,

I am working in an environment where EA is on a client laptop. I have advised them that they need to place EA on their production network but this seems to be taking IT a loong time ( over 1 year now).

In the interim, I have been using the xmi export on the root package as a backup strategy. This was working and I had tested the import and everything looked groovy.

Just last week, I found out that there was an error on line 105765 (!!!!) of the xmi import file and the Import bombs. So, I am moving forward with

a> closing down EA
b> backing up my project EAP file to CD
c> placing the EAP file on my prod network box for routine backup by IT

Has anyone else been in this situation and, if so, how have you backed up projects? I checked EA's online help and "backup" doesn't seem to exist as a utility.

I am using 6.5 of EA (don't get me started)

We are using EA on an SQL server backend, so the backup is part of the normal operations.

DAMN!,
My normal vitriolic response just got canned by facebook. (DON'T ask! )

In short, MORAL: the only backup you can ever trust is the one YOU make.

Rule 24: Never trust the network-nasties backups.
Rule 25: 5:00pm - Task: make backup.

I think it would be a lot safer to copy the database rather then using xmi export for the purpose of a backup.
