Managing Future State
« on: May 19, 2010, 01:15:30 pm »
Hi All,

I'm new to EA and I've had a look through the forums and found a few thoughts on this topic but nothing definitive. If there is a thread I've missed please point me to it.

1) Hiding Associations based on Current State/Future State
I've been mapping the AS-IS IT Systems and information flow associations between them. I've now commenced mapping some of the future state software and new associations in TO-BE diagrams. I've managed to setup diagram filters that hide and unhide different entities (packages, classes etc.) based on their attributes. However, I've been unable to find an auto way to hide information flow associations based on their attributes. I've been able to manually hide them from different diagrams however I'd like to be able to have filters that hide associations based on whether they are current or future state. I'd like to have a few states being "Current State - To Be Retained", "Current State - To Be Retired", "Future State - Potential", "Future State - Agreed".

2) Best practice on managing Current State and Future State
Also, are there any best practices (UML or EA) on managing future state models in general? Back when I was coder we used to use source control to branch and then merge at a later point. However, I believe if I can adequately tag entities and associations then this issue can simply be solved by differing views. Is there a tag attribute meant for this that I'm not aware of or should I be creating tags?

3) Finally any good books on EA?

Thanks in advance,

Pete

It appears that a gaping hole in EA 8 requirements means that connectors were omitted from participating in the new, highly useful, dynamic visual filtering!

Managing Current and Future State Associations
Well thats no good. Is there any way to alter an associations colour in order to flag it? I've tried setting a stereotype or adding tags but this doesn't seem to work for associations (no problems with entities).

Managing Current and Future State
I'm hoping someone will find this post and point me in the right direction if not I'm guessing there are no recommendations on managing this? If so, does anyone have any personal experiences on managing branches of EA.

Thanks,

Pete

Feature request: Allows connectors to be the subje

I have submitted a feature request with the above subject

Dynamic filter is is an excellent feature for allowing one diagram to display different features (eg current, future state).

Howver connectors, which are an import part of the information cannot be filtered.

This feature request asks that connectors can be filtered.
