RTF documentation: Update styles
« on: July 01, 2010, 08:38:51 am »
In the EA USer guide the documentation on updating styles from normal.rtf states
Quote
Update Styles
Imports the styles from Normal.rtf, found in the Doc Templates directory.
Notes:
Existing styles are not replaced.
This option is useful when creating a Master Document / Sub Documents that require consistent user-defined styles across multiple templates (including such things as numbering formats).

Could someone please clarify what "existing styles are not replaced" actually means?

Does it mean that any customisation to an existing style in normal.rtf is not applied to the RTF document or template in EA when update styles command is used?

Does it mean that older formatting (either manual from with EA, or from previous changes to normal.rtf) is thus retained forevere?

It seems to mean that "Update Styles" is only useful if existing styles are replaced in their entirety.

From my user perspective this is the behaviour I would expect of this command.

What it should state is that a style that is not changed in Normal.rtf is not overwritten in the template. So, only the changed styles are overwritten, not the whole stylesheet.

However, in response to some bug reports we are investigating changes to the way in which the Normal.rtf file is applied to templates, so I will update the text when that has been sorted out.
