Set up ODBC connection in Linux
« on: November 18, 2010, 10:54:36 pm »
Hi!

I'm running EA on Linux (CentOS) with Wine. I want to work with a model repository located on a server in a MySQL database. My problem is that I don't know how to set up a ODBC connection to a MySQL database in Linux. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Ahem. While I understand that RTFM is a standard response in the open source world, I suspect that it may be somewhat outside of the spirit of these user forums.

Well actually I think that there is a certain obligation to do some legwork before asking questions.

See for example how to get assiatance, admittedly for a different product, but substitute EA and see what you think

Unfortunately the link is blocked here...

Assuming that no legwork has been done is probably accurate, but sending a "how to google for something" link seemed a bit on the mean side.

If I was looking for a step-by-step set of instructions on how to run EA under wine, I'd probably start here too.

Sometimes, something will involve a step that is so arcane, you have very little chance of deducing it.

I'm particularly sympathetic as EA probably has a growing set of users who are not hardware/OS literate, because, like me, they work on the business side of applications development.

I'd have to say that to run EA on Linux using Wine would imply a certain mandatory geekiness.

(Can't believe that website is blocked, what's wrong with open source software? - try this)

Yes, I must agree on the geekiness scale.

So far I haven't successfully run any application under wine ;)

The link was blocked under the "chat room" category, this site is quite locked down. I'm surprised that I didn't need to get Sparx forums white-listed.

Andy,

Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to be mean. I'm not the kind of guy that starts shouting RTFM or PEBKAC on every possible occasion. Hell, I don't know how many times I've posted a link to the correct page in the manual to get people started.
In this instance I didn't know the answer myself, and I felt like there must be a ton of answers on the internet, which a quick google confirmed.
Sure, I could have posted a "normal" link to google search results, but I find lmgtfy.com particulary funny, and I was waiting for an opportunity to use it.
So if anything you can blame me for having a lousy sense of humor ;)

Well... quite the opposite. I don't want a ODBC driver for Linux to start with since I'm running EA in Wine. I didn't know that.

Thanks Alistair, you put me on the right path.
