Floating licenses
« on: January 25, 2011, 02:31:25 am »
Hello,

I have a few doubts about this kind of license (floating).

Reading your FAQ said that you provide an application to connect to the floating server. Am I right? If is so, do I have to pay for this "additional" service (annual payment)? How much this gonna cost?

Other question. Can I have this floating license hosted on my own server? Do I need an especial agreement or additional cost?

We are interested to purchase 3 floating licenses (corporate) but we have some doubts about the service.  What happens if we can't connect with your server? Can we work normally?

Thanks in advance, your replies will be helpful for our decision.

Best regards.

PS: I'm from Chile, hope you can understand my english  :D.

Floating keys are hosted on your own server.  We provide an application to run on your server.  To my knowledge we don't provide a key hosting service at all.

Annual subscription still applies if you want to keep up with the latest version of EA.

Claudio,

Just to clarify Simons response:
- You don't need to pay anything additional for the floating key application
- You don't have to pay the annual subcription, you can use EA perfectly fine without it. The only drawback is that you won't be able to download new versions of EA after the first year has passed, and you won't have access to priority support. But for the very low price of the annual subscription I think you shouldn't even consider not paying it.

Geert

PS. Your english seems perfectly fine to me ;)

Thanks a lot! Your responses were very helpful. We have already purchased EA  ;D.

Hope everything goes well.

Another doubt: If I have another license of EA (Corporate Standard, not floating), can I add this license to my new floating licenses?

Thanks again. Best regards.

Only floating licenses can be added to the key store.

Of course, you can still use that license without referring to the key store at all.

We have floating licences but we don't run a licence service on a server, each user just goes to the centralised key store file and picks up a licence when they need one (and if one is available).

Is this still a supported method, or should we have moved to the licence service?

I hope not actually because the current implementation is simple and effective,  if we have to have a service in place on a server then because of security etc..  we're going to have to get all sorts of technical people (server administrator, security administrator, LAN administrator etc.)  involved to achieve that.

If the file based key store is working for you then I'd say keep using it.

There are situations where it can cause problems, or where you want more control.  In that case you would need to move to the server solution.
