A good Use Case template for RTF
« on: February 08, 2011, 02:31:51 am »
Afternoon all, I need to author several Use Case documents and have been experimenting with Scenarios with limited success. I believe I have the Basic Flow correct, with a few Alternate Flows and Exceptions. My task is to document the Use Case and have used the RTF document generator. No matter what I try, the formatting is poor. For example steps 1,2,3 etc come out in subscript and the wording normal, all the text is on 1 line and with no spaces. I am after an output similar to the Sparx example that can be found here : http://www.sparxsystems.com/bin/Use%20Case.pdf
Any suggestions where I can get the template used to generate the sample, or something similar?

Hmm...

I'm assuming that you've tried the (use case template) and (use case scenario template) supplied with EA...

I used the latter as the basis for my template, but it already is putting the scenarios into a table which manages the formatting nicely.

I haven't found a way to add all the other information (like document control etc.) into the model (so that it can be picked up by the .rtf template) and instead include that in the MS Word documents that collect information from .rtf files.

Those word documents were developed in house...

There's a good chance that I don't understand the question.

Hi Andy thanks for the response and no you havn't misunderstood. I have tried the templates you suggested and it's a shame I can't cut'n'paste between machines to show the output. The Sparx example shows entries like this:

------------------------------
Compose Message
1. The use case begins when the User chooses to compose a new message. The System prompts
the User for message details. The details include: the recipient or recipients, the content or body,
the subject and attachments.
2. The User chooses to select a recipient for the message. Refer to the "Choose Recipient From
Address Book" use case.
----------------------------

However when I use the (use case template) I get
Basic Path :
[edit]1[/edit] Add water to kettle. 2 put kettle on. 3 pour water
ok, less description that the example but the formatting shows the issue.
I've tried the (use case scenario template) which is far better but it still has a few quirks. For example, the table lists at the top of the Basic Path the alternates, but the first characters are always missing. So in my Tea making scenario the alternate path is
1a. o Water instead of
1a. No Water.

I don't think there is a simple solution of "here's a new template to try", so I guess my time today will be spent trying to develop one of my own.

Thanks again for the response

A few mods to the Use Case Scenario template should suffice, as you've indicated. I do find the template editing process a bit confusing. I also don't seem to get the problem of your missing first letter. Although in my case, I prefer not having them listed at the top at all, and have removed that part of the template.

I suggest you upgrade to version 8, if you haven't already. It now includes structured scenarios and an option to copy your scenario steps to the structured steps and it will print correctly.
