Multiple Monitors
« on: September 14, 2011, 11:09:49 am »
Hi,

Does EA have multiple monitor support? Ie. it would be good to have the same file open on two monitors for reference and for activity.

You could open a second instance of EA.

I use EA on two monitors, at least for toolbars etc.

Where EA has fallen behind is that diagram tabs cannot be detached.

Please submit a feature request to back up those previously made for this.

Any progress on this?
I tried to float a diagram and move it to another monitor.
But it did not resize correctly.

What didn't resize?

It seems to work for me.  Certainly, I haven't noticed any issues.  The diagram DOES change its size as you drag it off the tabs, but that is normal Windows operation, AFAIK.

Tried again.
Manually dragged the floating window to another screen.
Caveat: original monitor was 4k, the other 1920 x 1200 or 1080.
Could make it larger manually, but on clicking the max button on the right top corner of the window, some of it went out of screen.
And even with manual resizing the text remained huge.

Opening another instance of EA doesn't help either.
It won't allow another copy of the same project.

Where the two monitors are of different densities, Windows can have issues.  Sparxians have provided information on why this is so.  If you search the forum you might find those explanations.  Otherwise, tomorrow morning (Eastern Australian time), a Sparxian may respond directly.

Things work a LOT better when the multiple monitors are the same pixel density.

That's weird. What type of repository are you using?
I've opened the same model in multiple instances many times without issues.

Please let me know which type of repository should I use so that can I have 2 instances of the same project visible.

But it did not resize correctly.
The problem you are describing didn't exist when this thread was started.

Windows now allows you to specify a different scaling for each monitor. EA declares itself as aware of the system level scaling, but not the per-monitor scaling. Changing that is challenging and time consuming. Windows is meant to automatically scale all of the API calls on different monitors, but it's inconsistent in how it does that, which is why you see the bad resize behavior.

Yes, multi resolution monitors is new. So, likely it is a API problem.
Anyway, opening 2 instances is the workaround that solved the problem.
I read about the way the repositories are created, they all are database type.
So, 2 instances of EA should work.
Clearly, I was doing something wrong, now 2 instances are working even with the repository I am currently using.
Thank you all

You should remember that working in the same diagram on both instances might give you funny results. Usually one or both would croak with a locking issue they found.

Yes, that is what I am afraid of.
Will have to be careful; edit in one and use the other only for viewing.
E.g. edit one activity diagram in one while view the class in another.
Thanks for the heads up.
