Is there a way to embed a PDF file in Sparx just as you can with a RTF file?

No, I don't think so.

and I tried this (931) and its not clear what is supposed to happen.
All that happened for me was after opening the linked document, choosing Insert OLE object, I got

Then a file open dialogue.
One of two things then happened (I tried this several times).
I managed to select a pdf file, which then opened externally in Acrobat10,
or EA hung on the following dialogue box and I had to use task manager to kill it

What it didn't do is add the pdf document into the linked document so it was available for subsequent use.

Don't use the EA "Insert OLE Object" option. You will no be able to insert "as icon".

Do it in Word (or OpenOffice) and copy-paste the inserted object into the linked document.

I tried inserting the PDF in a document using Word 2007,
saving as RTF, and importing into an EA RTF document.
But only the first page of the PDF is visible both in Word and in the internal viewer.

Hello to lovely NZ,

I had the same question a few days ago and was posting it to EA support directly. Here is what they told me:

- how to link to a pdf document instead of to a *.rtf or *.htm?
Are you referring to document generation, linked internal documents or linking to external files?
The current version of Enterprise Architect supports generation of PDF documents (via the RTF generation dialog).  Linked Documents within the model can only be stored in RTF format.  You should be able to link to any external file via the Files tab on an element's Properties dialog.

EA support helped me on this as follows

Our developers have confirmed that there is a bug in this behaviour and it is logged to be fixed.  We cannot yet say when (in which build) the fix will be implemented.

As a current workaround you can avoid the issue by opening the PDF you wish to insert into the linked document in Adobe Reader and going to
Edit->Copy File to Clipboard.

Once the file is on the clipboard, return to the Linked Document and right click on the document and select Edit->Paste Special and select "Adobe Acrobat Document Object" from the Data Type list and select "Paste".  This will allow you to insert the PDF into the linked document.

You can also drag and drop the PDF directly onto the Linked Document to create an OLE Object.
