modeling enterprise application integration
« on: August 09, 2012, 12:30:19 pm »
Are there any notations that can be used within Enterprise Architect to model integration scenarios using enterprise application integration middleware platforms such as Biztalk.  A popular notation can be found here:  http://www.eaipatterns.com/index.html. Was hoping to find something within Enterprise Architect that could do the trick.

Have a look at ArchiMate 2.0 from The Open Group, but the Sparx implementation has not been brought up to 2.0 and is - unfortunately - not well implemented. Better to look at the free graphical tool "Archi" (http://archi.cetis.ac.uk/) for an idea.

You are out-of-date: ArchiMate 2.0 support was introduced with EA 9.3

I cannot find the EIP patterns to represent a file transfer, message channel, etc as listed on http://www.eaipatterns.com/ from the ArchiMate project.

Does EA plan to suport EIP in the future?

Thanks
Guillaume

Guillaume,

Even if Sparx won't implement it you can build such support yourself in an MDG extension.
At a first glance it looks rather straight forward, add some stereotypes with a their corresponding alternate images/shape scripts and you're done.

Hi Geert,

Yes this is indeed feasible via an MDG but if Sparx was planning to support it, that would save time.

I'm wondering however if the MDG is not gonna lead to issues in displaying the images when you start resizing an element. I have a feeling vector graphics aren't properly supported.

I'm not sure, I've never actually used those MDG things.
You better ask Paolo or qwerty

Depends. Most elements are drawn "correctly according to EAUI". But ports (and I guess parts) have some internal resizing which always limits their size (port to 16 pixels and1 parts to a cropped value inside the surrounding element).

1This must have been changed recently. See post below.

Actually, ports can be resized. There is an option in their context menu to allow them to be resized, but also a profile can give them any size it likes. (Usually this is a problem when the person writing the profile doesn't realise it's happening off the size of the stereotype element on the diagram.)
