BMM - Business Motivation Model
« on: February 11, 2013, 02:19:40 am »
Has anyone tried to create a BMM in Enterprise Architect?   What kind of diagram is best?

I would like to try drawing two kinds of BMM Model. The first is a simple collection of lists with bullet points. The second is lists that show the links between different instances of each type bulleted item. So for example, it would be easy to see which tactics satisfy a particular strategy ...which goals and objectives prove the strategy and tactics are work ...which Business Rules are covered in which Business Policies etc....essentially a form of completeness check.

The best I have come up with is using text controls on a Mind Map diagram. Frankly, it does not look very presentable and I wondered how others might do the same thing in EA.

I fear this may be best done in Visio or Powerpoint.  If so can these diagrams be stored and edited through EA?

You can use the TOGAF MDG it has Motivation Model Diagrams. Alternatively you can use Archimate Motivation extensions - not quite as rich as the Business Rules Group's BMM. However Archimate have published some view points that like stakeholder motivation etc. Can find these on the Open Group website.
You could also use matrixes to cross reference Business policies vs business rules etc.

I've found softening the diagrams by making the outline the same colour as the fill colour can make them more presentable. I tend to use pastel colours.

Visio diagrams can be imported in to EA although not always produces good results. Powerpoint - no.

I know someone who is working on an MDG for EBMM as published by Nick Malik at MS. Not sure what their plans are for making it public.

Hope that helps  :)

Thanks Sunshine.

I will check out your suggestions and see what results. I don't think my EA includes TOGAF.  Archimate is available so I can try that.

Aaaah, slight snag.   The OMG BMM is way different from the Archimate Motivational Model.   There are some similarities in principle though.

Yes Archimate is a bit more cut down than BMM. However I have found its better received by CxOs than the BMM.
