Data Flow arrows don't drag and drop
« on: June 09, 2013, 12:48:15 am »
I tried the 30-day trial of version 9 a while back and found the EA work process very unintuitive. I'm trying again with version 10, and trying to put a bit more time into figuring the application out.  But I've run into a issue right off the bat and wonder if I'm doing something wrong.

I'm just trying to create simple context diagram (DFD).  Adding the process and externals was easy, just drag and drop.  But when I tried to add the data flows things started getting weird.  I would try to drag them onto the diagram and there is no indication that you are dragging anything.  The first 3 times after trying do drag it the external I wanted to start with, the flow arrow would show up but looped back into that external (as both source and destination).  But after the 3rd flow arrow, now nothing works.  I can't seem to add another flow arrow no matter what I do.

I can't believe there is a 3 flow arrow limit to the diagram, so either I am doing something totally wrong (although how hard should drag and drop be?), EA has some sort of bug,  or the user interface is still so whacked out bad that I should probably stop trying to figure out if this is software my employer should be looking at.

Any suggestions on what is going on would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Select (any) connector from the toolbox.
After moving the mouse pointer it turns into a hand symbol.
Click the source
and drag to the target.

Alternatively select the source,
click the little arrow symbol appearing top right
and drag to the target.
You will be presented with a drop down of possible connectors.

Drawing information flows with "flows realized" is a bit tricky, though.

Thanks.  I eventually figured out that if I clicked on the data flow arrow symbol and then clicked EXACTLY on the name of an element I would get the arrow that started and ended with that element.  I could then change the end points.

These are both more efficient.   ;D
