Data Dictionary
« on: April 25, 2012, 10:48:15 am »
Being relatively new to EA, I have not found a means to gathering data into a 'data dictionary'. What this is supposed to do for a user, at a minimum, is to allow input of a term such as a variable name, its data type (date, text, integer, etc.), how it is used in the context of a modeling element, and who created it.

Since I'm new to EA, I wouldn't want to have to write an automation script to gather this data, so if anyone knows of a work-around, or the actual existence of this type of feature, please let me know. Thanks!  :-/

Have a look at the white paper located at http://tinyurl.com/89mgptj

A method for creating a Data Dictionary is given at the end - page 16 onwards.

Much thanks, Graham! That's a fabulous tip for a fabulous program. Does Enterprise Architect do the dishes as well? I'll likely tweak the script for more functionality when I get a minute.  :)

Great info.

Can the data dictionary query be adjusted so that tags can appear as columns in the dictionary? If so, an example of how to do this wold be appreciated.

Thx!

Try this:

https://community.sparxsystems.com/component/search/?searchword=Data%20Dictionary&searchphrase=all&Itemid=121

If you do not have a login ID for the Community Site, this page gives you the option to register. If you do have a login ID, you can open the Community Site and pick the information you need (4th document in the list? Third? Maybe Graham can confirm.)
Best Regards, Roy

It's none of those Roy.   The white paper is actually called "Data Modelling - From conceptual model to DBMS", which means you can't find it searching on "Data Dictionary".

This is an official, albeit old, paper written by Sparx that was originally on the main Sparx site in the white papers section.  Not sure why it's been removed from there, perhaps because it's been superceded by more recent functionality in EA?

Anyway, it can still be found on the community site at this link    http://tinyurl.com/y9twq3sg

As I said before the data dictionary bit is in the appendix from page 16 onwards.
As it's an old paper, use with caution.
