Installl different version of EA on the same machi

Hello Sparxian,

First of all, happy new year to all of you, i wish tons of EA debuggin =)


Question (shall we?) : Can we have 2 (or more) version of EA on the same machine?
--> it work for me with the trial version but once i tried to use 2 version in // it asked me to uninstall the older one in order to install the new one (all in the install setup).
Is there a way to have to version that cohexist on one machine?

version are 9.3.931 and 11.1.1112 (in case it matters (but it should not))

Hope not to come to have one VM to each version ...

Try searching for "different versions" using to top left button.

I tried exactly that search before posting.

Only 2 results (now 3 with mine), none answer correctly this problem.

EDIT : This link does not work, but i assure you that "different versions" does not work, same goes for multiple versions.

I am sorry to be such a dispointment for you Geert, maybe you can teach me?

Other wise, i don't see the answer to my problem in those links, but maybe that's my fault since my question is a bit vague. I want to install EA v11.1 Client and keep my EA v9.3 (all on the same working machine, i am working on a local eap for now, so i dont care about server splitting or database evolving, etc...).

Each time i click on the setup easetupfull.exe i have this message (i typed it...):

Enterprise Architect 11 upgrade warning. Version 9.3.931.22 of Enterprise is already installed. You must uninstall the existing version before installing Enterprise Architect 11 Version 11.1.1112.3. Do you want to automatically uninstall the existing version of Enterprise Architect 11 now?

If y click NO it just stop the installer. And i dont want to click YES (well i did and uninstalled my 9.3   )

I still keep the version from 9.3 on. Just renaming the program folders. So I can test things with different versions. Never had an issue with that procedure. The current version's folder is named EA and all others have the version suffix. When installing a new version i rename the old program folder (attach the suffix) and install the new version.

Hey hey,

EA stores data not just in its program directory but in the users' directories and of course the registry. Sparx does not guarantee that multiple installations, which are not officially supported, won't interfere with each other.

The directory renaming approach is in my view one which simply sweeps potential problems under the rug and hopes for the best. This seems incompatible with any sort of product testing, where I assume you want complete control over both disk and registry.

Why not simply use virtual machines?

Thank you Uffe for that complete answer.

Virtual machine are, for sure, the best way to keep a test environment BUT it's also the heavy way. I was looking for something easier, plus, i work on a (non performant) machine with a particular (shi**y) corporate environment.

User only use one version of EA (old or new one) while i develop and maintain MDG for both environment (wich explain why i need both).

For sure, if EA modify his way around registry, it should lead me to tons of problems but i understood that what is under (or behind? not sure of the correct expression) is just an old lady that has not receive any evolution since ... WW1? </joke>

I will consider using a testing environment on a VM to preserve it "just in case"   and pray for IT departement not to lose it

Well, from a practical experience from V3 on (or was it even 2.something?) I can tell that the renaming approach worked always. Sparx is very conservative when it comes to data structures. Just lean back  

VM's are for sure the safer approach, but you need quite some resources too.
