Logical Model - Easy Filtering of "related only"?
« on: August 05, 2015, 06:19:03 am »
Is there some way to restrict a Logical Model  view to only the objects related to a specific object?  My database has some 70 objects, but I only want to generate a quick print of the 8 or 9 tables in one logical "corner", and get on with preparing to ETL it...Wouldn’t that be a great feature, if not?  I was thinking of a right click option like Related Only...
Thanks for reading.

There's a little funnel icon on the toolbar above a diagram.

Click it and then select one element. The elements not directly related to the selected element will be faded. (Note, it appears if your diagram filter is set to hide filtered elements completely it won't do anything. I assume that's so you don't lose your complete diagram by selecting something)

Thanks very much, Simon.  You replied to my email as well, and I am pasting some more of your helpful explanation and a workaround :

"Unfortunately it's not possible to display and print a specific element and all its related elements as you described. I will submit a feature request on your behalf so that this is considered for implementation in a future release.

Currently the closest option would be to manually select the element and it's related elements, then Copy to the clipboard using the right click "Copy" option. You can then paste into an image editor and Print the image.
"

I also found that Excel's ability to print to fit makes it an easy way to get decent printed output.

If any other users would like to support this feature, unless there's some other mechanism, I'd appreciate some support for the idea in this thread.

There is a bunch of stuff that is wrong missing from diagram filters that I'd prefer to see before this.
My current tack is to create several small logical diagrams each with an important table and use insert related elements to flesh it out.

I agree, that's my approach as well.  It's fast and self contained for the element in question.   You have to be careful though because relationships added in the future won't be automatically shown on the diagram.  You'd have to go through the 'insert related elements' process again to refresh things
