Security Group Permissions on Model

I want to specify that only certain groups can edit certain parts of the model.  If I assign a user to a group that user can set a group lock anywhere, but I want to limit the user of that group to have write access to only a sub-set of the model.

Can this be done?

I guess with a finer group granularity that should be possible. It might turn out to be an administrative nightmare, though.
