Copy a Base Project in EA 12
« on: August 13, 2015, 10:23:11 pm »
I used to be able to copy a base (template) project in EA 10, but I can't seem to see the option in EA 12.  The only option appears to be to open the template project, then select "Save Project As".

Am I missing something?

The feature I am referring to is referenced at:

http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/12.0/projects_and_teams/createanewproject.html

This is a feature we currently use.  Where is the option in EA 12? File > New Project just opens up a file dialog, there are none of the options that were present in EA 10, eg. copy base project.

You do know that as a workaround you can simply copy the (base project) file to a new location right and rename it right?

Thanks for the suggestion Geert, but this doesn't suit our needs.  As the help explains:

"If you intend to use an existing project file as the template for a new project, it is important to use this method rather than simply copying the .EAP file using Windows Explorer. This process resets all the unique identifiers for Packages and elements, so that your new project is truly unique - otherwise it is simply an exact copy of the original project."

We need unique identifiers, this is to enable us to share components between projects (there are issues if the IDs are not unique). So copying the file is not an option.

Without having read this thread thoroughly: You can achieve unique GUIDs by making packages (version) controlled.

Do you have the File | Save Project as menu option? Open the base or target project and select that menu option. If the Help topic for the resulting dialog is still wrong, it will be refreshed with the next release of EA.

Hi Roy,

I tried "Save Project As" to set-up a new project from a base project. But this will end in an endless loop. EA requires a data source or computer data source. Seems to be a bug for me.
