How to use WAN Optimizer?
« on: November 17, 2015, 07:00:20 pm »
Hello,
some facts and background information:
  • Our company has two sites (Europe and India)
  • The central repository server for our EA models is located in Europe
  • The site in India is connected to our Europe LAN via VPN
  • Working in EA is awful slow for the guys in India :(
Our idea is to use the "WAN Optimizer" to speed up things for them.

For testing purposes I (sitting in Europe) installed the WAN Optimizer services on my laptop. I am not expexting speed improvements, I only want to be able to connect to our EA models using the WNA Optimizer as proxy instead of connecting to our SQL server directly.
  • The service is running on port 4242 (default)
  • In the WAN Optimizer Admin application I added a "Database Manager" using an already existing "connection string" provided by using an existing ODBC data source
How do I know the connection from EA to the model on the server goas "through" the WAN Optimizer?
What other changes do I have to do (e.g. change ODBC data source configuration)?

The user guide for WAN Optimizer does not mention anything. It only describes how to install, to configure and to troubleshoot.
I does not mention how to "use" it after installation and configuration.

The WAN Optimizer has been replaced by the Cloud Services in EA v12

Geert is correct, the cloud services provides all the WAN optimizer advantages plus more.

It also has the same basic requirements for getting a speed improvement. You need to install it on the fastest possible network to the DB server. The best possible install location is on the same machine as the db server.

You won't see any improvement in speed installing it on your local laptop and connecting to it. But if your guys in India were able to connect to your laptop they should see an improvement. (Not that a personal laptop would make an ideal server by any means)

OK, thanks. I will give "Cloud Services" a try.

Did anyone notice that the "Cloud Services.rtf" provided with the installation package seems a little bit broken?
Its size is about 15 MB but Word 2007 and 2010 only display the first 4 pages.
How about providing a PDF? Shall I report this as bug?

The support people were looking into the problem with the user guide. In the meantime, contact either Sparx Sales or Sparx Support and ask for a copy of the complete user guide.

Or see if this link helps:

Thanks to all for pushing me into the right direction :).
The service is running and seems to be properly configured. Our Indian colleagues start testing via "cloud connection" within the next few days.

Currently I have one additional question:
Is a "project transfer" into an EAP file still possible if I am connected via the cloud service and without having local ODBC connections configures to the model?
In the project transfer dialog window I see no option to use a "cloud connection" as source.

As we are transferring the model content into an EAP file on every software release, as "baseline" that will be checked-in into our version control system, a transfer into an EAP file is somewhat important to us.

Project Transfer over a cloud connection is not possible.
