Actors Notes into Glossary as definitions
« on: August 03, 2004, 08:32:45 pm »
One thing that may be useful is to automatically update the project glossary from some of the entities in a diagram.

For example, it would be useful to have the Notes field of an Actor be treated as a definition in the glossary (a checkbox indicating that this is desired would be good too).
The name of the Actor and the contents of the Notes filed would automatically update and entry in the glossary.  In my own perfect world...The two would be inseperably linked.

For the life of me - I've got to ask "Why?" on this one!

If the notes are already in the model in the actor element, why would there be a need to duplicate them in the glossary?

"It is not so expressed, but what of that?
'Twere good you do so much for charity."

Oh I forgot, we aren't doing him are we.

I agree with Sargasso.

Notes are what the name implies: just notes, not glossary definitions

In my (imperfect) world the two are NOT linked.

In the initial phase of a project I sometime use notes to describe/clarify the actors (or other UML objects).

Later in the project the content of these notes goes into glossary definitions and, at the same time, the notes are deleted.

The only usefull functionality would be an option to convert a note to a glossary definition. This will save you a cut and paste action.

I think the other way around would be more usefull!

A note should be connected with a trace to any UML element, e.g. a tag, a note field or a glossary entry.

E.g. you double click on a class and use the rigth mouse button to make an UML note from the note field in the class. That note is then automaticaly connected to the class it stems from with a trace link.

I see you guys' point.

I was looking at a glossary as a 'quick reference' to help readers of the documentation.  It would be helpful of the description of an actor or some elment in the documentation could be automatically put in the glossary to aid in quickly looking up a defnition when reviewing the system.

Also, to add to this, the glossry should be exported into the documentation feature.  Also the task list.  I can't get either to go into my documentation.

Put a model into a DB repository, add  a little bit of SQL and if you like spicy reports you can add a little of excel formatting and you are done.
Regards.
