New online lesson
« on: December 08, 2009, 04:06:38 am »
I've looked at the great online tutorials from Sparx. However, I don't see one that starts from a "blank page" and then goes though the motions of creating a project, and then adding models, packages, diagrams, etc.The online manual is too detailed for this purpose. If there is an online tutorial that does this please post the link.  I am UML-literate, but not EA literate. Thanks.

Great idea. I've been wondering where the "blank page" video / sound demos are for years.

The technology is available (Camtasia Studio) and examples of good quality eLearning abound (lynda.com).

Such videos could only increase market penetration.

The people in Creswick, Victoria will be amazed to see all the local Sparxians parking their new Maseratis in front of the Smokeytown Cafe to pick up their lattes.

Such a tutorial is indeed feasible and a good thing. If you submit a formal feature request our web tutorial guys might well consider it.

However, in the meantime, is the following quick-start tutorial in the Help of any use to you?

http://www.sparxsystems.com/uml_tool_guide/start_uml_modeling/quick_start.html

@Thelonius - Maser-whaties? Lart-ays? Strewth, Mate, this ain't MELbun y'know. Nuthin' wrong with a good Holden Ute an' a mug uv International Roast. Jeez!

(But.... I really would kill for a good flat white, really!)

Umm. That's a welcome "how to" tutorial. And good. As far as it goes.

But (and you've heard me say this before) - I know how to make the user interface work. (Some of it, any way...)

What I'd really like to see are "goal oriented" streaming video+audio tutorials that start with questions like:

"So you want to use Sparx EA and the MDG TOGAF add-in to help you manage your Enterprise Architecture process? No problem! Let's get started. Here's how."

I suppose if I was clever and ambitious, I'd create these videos myself and sell them over the Internet. That way, I could eventually afford to live in Creswick and drive a Mas ... Holden Ute.

Change topic:

Living the pure life in Creswick does have a few downsides, I guess.

Here's your solution to the "flat white" problem:

You buy one of these beasts:

And get your beans sent up from these guys:

http://www.melbournegastronome.com/2009/06/seven-seeds-melbournes-newest-coffee.html

You just need a good grinder.

Problem solved.

International Roast? Ay-yi-yi...

Hi RoyC,

While Smokeytown does not currently support the "Flat White" functionality you describe, they do provide a killer "Mocha" which does a similar thing. You could then create an addin that adds an extra dash of milk to the result and that may provide you with what you need.

I'd suggest sending a feature request to them asking for them to support the missing menu item.
Best Regards,

Michael

I got the impression that ChrisF wanted a 'make a model any model' tutorial. But the more business-task oriented tutorials are also a Good Thing. Again, a formal feature request might help give them a brighter spot on the radar.

I will also submit my own feature requests to Support for that fascinating piece of hardware, and to Smokeytown for the (I hope, silky smooth) download of caffeine with just the right element of vapourware. I can at least try to adapt to Macchiato. The beauty of International Roast, however, is that if you can't get it you don't have to spend months of withdrawal pangs trudging despondently from cafe to cafe trying to find just the right 'one'. You just bang the sole of your boot over a tin mug and add hot water to whatever falls off.
Best Regards, Roy

 ;D

I confess. I have drunk International Roast in my life. When I was desperate.

Coffee is not a beverage.

It's a recreational drug.

(snip)

I was creating a project with Requirements, Use Case, and Class models - I got that much out of the link above. But I struggled learning how to add requirements under the Requirements Model, same for the use cases under the Use Case Model (I've not gotten further enough for the classes under the Class Model). But now I'm trying to figure out how to "link" my Requirements and Use Case models together for example. Such a tutorial will be great, and it doesn't have to include these particular models, except maybe the requirements model since, IMHO, projects should include requirements.

For your immediate needs, we can probably help you here in the forum. To provide the tutorials, perhaps you could submit a feature request.

Universally, you populate a diagram by dragging element icons from either:

  • the EA UML Toolbox onto the diagram - Use Cases from the Use Case Toolbox pages onto a Use Case diagram, Requirements from the Requirements Toolbox pages onto a Requirements diagram, Classes from the Class Toolbox pages onto a Class diagram, or
  • the Project Browser onto a diagram, if you want to re-use existing elements, especially if you want to create overview or tracability diagrams showing how things come together.
I think you should read the Traceability section for your specific purposes, drawing Use Cases and Requirements together. See:

http://www.sparxsystems.com/uml_tool_guide/uml_model_management/traceability.html

And then ask more questions on this forum. This is an area that many people have discussed (and argued about) so you will get good assistance.

Ok I just spent the better part of the day creating requirements in RaQuest, and creating a relationship matrix between my requirements - TEST001 is related to PART001 for example. Now when I open the project in EA, how can I see those relationships? Surely I do NOT have to recreate them!!!

When I ipen the *.EAP file I created in RaQuest in EA, I see an RaQuest package in EA, with package ##RaQuestInfo##, and then packages Trash and Work underneath that. Underneat Work, I see the Relationship maps I created in RaQuest.

The relationships between requirements, made by matrix of RaQuest, is dependency relationships between elements in Enterprise Architect.
You can see it in Enterprise Architect by putting TEST001 and PART001 in one diagram.

In RaQuest, Tools | Project Options | General Features 1 tab has "Save a relationship map as requirement's child diagram" checkbox.
Check it, then you can also create relationship map under requirements, but in Work package.

Errm, on my way to work I actually drive past a construction site and I am not quite sure but that beast lookes almost the same as the device with which they tar the road. Well, that one has wheels, but besides that, it looks rather similar  8-) ;D
