Preview element when adding to a diagram
« on: April 29, 2014, 12:28:32 am »
Hi,

When you drag/drop an existing element from the Project Browser to the current diagram, an icon is displayed before releasing the mouse button to add the element. It lets you choose where to add the element.
Would it be possible to show what the element, e.g. a class, interface looks like before it is added to the diagram? (some kind of preview)

thanks
Guillaume

It doesn't sound terribly useful to me. All you need to do is let go to see exactly what will be drawn.

Simon,

I think it would be useful. It would allow you to precisely position the element from the first time so you don't have to move it anymore after dropping it.
Visio has this feature.

It has now been explained to me what you are talking about (my head will stop ringing in a day or two!).

I'm still not certain of the value of the feature. You will either have a generic size for the element shape, which will not help you fit the actual element into a likely spot, or the precise coordinates of the element as it appears on other diagrams. But then what? You will pull your dragged element around looking for somewhere it will fit, and then you will probably still have to reorganize the diagram to make the connectors link the elements directly and clearly.  Where is your advantage?

I have to agree with Roy. Most (almost all) times I place a new element on a diagram I have to re-arrange a lot. Elements, connectors, labels. It would not help much to see what size it would have. It's not a jigsaw puzzle.

Roy,

In some cases (classes with a lot of features) you can get surprised by the size of the element.
I'm not saying it would be a great feature, but in some cases it would save a manipulation or two.
It would just be a "nice" feature. (and it would be a sexy "sales feature" as well)

I agree with Geert, this is a nice to have feature.

FYI this request was submitted by one of our clients, as it is available from another UML modelling tool they use.
