Direction indicator lost on ArchiMate Associations
« on: February 18, 2016, 01:44:32 pm »
A UML Association has the mechanism that you can set the direction indicator (a small black triangle) on the name label.  (Interestingly and a bit of EAUI, you can set the direction indicator on ANY label).  However, if the stereotype is set to ArchiMate_Association, then the direction indicator disappears.  Now since an ArchiMate Association has no arrows to indicate navigability, I would have thoght that preserving this feature would be useful.

Is this a bug or should I put in a feature request?

In any event, is there any shapescript method that would allow me to turn it on/off programmtically?

To my mind, further UMLising the Archimate implementation would be a bug in itself.

This isn't really UMLising as it would be an optional feature - that is, by default it would not be on.

In ArchiMate, directionality is important (but not often mentioned).  However, in the specific case of Access (an implied Association ) it is even mentioned in the standard.  In a live model, you can always hover over a line to see the direction, however, when you print or take a copy and paste, you can't!  In those cases, where there might be some doubt as to the directionality, I'd like to be able to indicate expressly.

In any event, on our modelling environment, we'll be indicating directionality, where it's not obvious (or not implicit) - as we use it as important metadata about the semantics of the relationship.  I'm just hoping I'd be able to hook into a standard mechanism rather than "roll my own".

Personally I think you'll have problems.  If you look at the traceability view you'll see that most of the directionality appears to be backwards.  While it's actually "Archimate correct" it would have made more sense from the tooling perspective to just reverse the shape script.  It certainly would have made working out derived relationships easier.

Anything that I want syntactically correct I draw first in Archi.
