Image library
« on: February 24, 2016, 05:52:15 am »
Hi guys,

Does anyone know of any alternative image library to use within EA? Even if by a 3rd party?

The current version of the image library seems to be too limited, with not enough images, and with a lot of images which are really just very ugly..  :(

Basically I want to be able to create diagrams which are more adequate to more business stakeholders, but most diagrams I have end up by not being good enough. :-\

Thanks!

Cheers,
Pedro

I vaguely remember this being asked for in the past. I can't remember some positive answer, though. Try the search (good luck).

Create your own.  Import something like the OSA icon library (http://www.opensecurityarchitecture.org/cms/library/icon-library) into a blank repository and then export them as reference data.

Hi guys,

I tried the search, that didn't really help, but I think the OSA library you suggested may help.

If someone knows of any other icon library please share.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Pedro

Hi all,

Couple thoughts is all.

If you want, you can get your images to appear not just in the diagrams but also as icons in the project browser, and in the diagram toolbox. For this to work you have to create an MDG Technology instead of importing the images as reference data, which is a little more involved but might be more useful.

This is a slightly different approach from regular EA images, in that the images aren't just images but proper paid-up model elements. Of course, if you're only planning to cut diagrams out of EA and place them in documents or presentations, the toolbox and project browser don't matter.

Could the process of importing a third-party library be automated? Yes, it could.

But that would require reverse-engineering either Sparx' database format (t_image) or file format for reference data. Not an impossible task (quite easy, in fact, for any halfway decent software engineer), but probably only worth the effort if you're planning on working with multiple image libraries.

I agree with comments about the poor quality and quantity of the image library.
Sparx, how about making it easy to create a third party image library MDG and additionally publishing a few libre image libraries for download. Please
