BPMN layers and creating Child diagrams
« on: March 30, 2016, 01:22:12 am »
Dear members, I tried making a BPMN model from level 1 to 3 but it was not obvious to me the best way to create child diagrams when the child is used in multiple processes as a child owned by many parents. I find hyperlinks rather clumsy. Is there a smarter way to do is so I can for example just click on a process and immediately go to the child diagram (Used in many places).

Regards

From BPMN-activity context menu (right mouse click) choose 'new child diagram'. There choose 'Select composite diagram' for selecting an allready existing diagram or 'Add diagram...' to create a new one. Next make sure that the option 'composite structure diagram' is selected so a double-click on the BPMN-activity will open the child diagram.

Thanks Stefan,, I am using version 9 at the moment. I see your advice works in version 12. How do I achieve the same in 9 until I upgrade?

This function exists since ever. However it changed its name, place and behaviour over the versions. I must confess i can't remember how it was in v9. Look for 'advanced' - 'add composite diagram' or the like or wait for someone with v9 to answer.

Right-click element in diagram | Advanced | Make Composite  or
Right-click element in Project Browser | Advanced | Make Composite

Double-click on the Composite element to show the child composite diagram, or right-click and select Advanced | Show Composite Diagram to show the composite diagram within the frame of the parent composite element.

You should be able to find the procedures and supporting information in the integrated Help without too much difficulty. Release 9 has the .chm file Help with an index.

Hi Roy thanks for your input. The process you describe is for creating a new child diagram. What I really want to do is re-use an existing child diagram as a common process in many parents. So the option in version 12 to choose a composite child is not possible in version 9?

Thanks

In version 9 of EA you cannot select a diagram to become your composite, however, there is a rather clumsy work-around:

1) Select the diagram you want to "drill down" to in the Project Browser
2) Move this diagram as a child of the element you want to link from
3) Make this element a composite
4) Repeat 2) and 3) for all other elements you want to link from
5) Move the diagram back to its original position

This will suffice until you upgrade to version 12.1

Cheers

Phil
