Image manager improvement
« on: March 31, 2016, 11:13:53 pm »
One of our client is struggling with the management of images within their EA projects.
Even when images have been renamed, it is difficult to manage them when you have over 100/200.

It would be useful to improve the Image Manager e.g. with the following:
- add types or categories to group images (e.g. similar to the glossary)
- add a search on image names
- have the ability to generate an XML Reference Data file with a selection of images (not all)
- when copying a package from an EA project to another one, it would be good to select the image we want to keep in the target EA project (or merge with an existing image in the target project)

Adding categorization would likely require a change to the DB schema, so that probably won't happen, but a treeview based on the first letter could be useful.

Also, a better naming scheme for auto-created images (created when you Apply Image from Clipboard) would help.
Instead of "Image9999", how about "Img <diagram name> <yymmdd>"? (Bearing in mind that elements may be nameless, but diagrams may not.) Or failing that, just "Img <yymmdd>-999"?

I'd also like to add that the Usage function is very useful, but the result dialog should be labelled "Image Usage", not "Element Usage".
Also, the image ID shown in the result dialog is never seen anywhere else in the GUI -- you have to do a DB search to find it. So that column can go, or at least it can be hidden.

My theories are always correct, just apply them to the right reality.

Living in hope

On a related note it is a shame that the inability to make schema improvements appears to be gradually increasing technical and business functionality debt
