EA forgets its configuration on floating license
« on: April 14, 2016, 04:51:38 pm »
Hello,

we are using the Sparx Keystore service for providing our floating licenses to the EA users.
From time to time all licenses are in use.
A user that starts EA, when all licenses are in use, gets an error message (as expected):
Quote
No available key for Enterprise Architect could be found.
Enter a key or connect to new keystore now?
[Yes]  [No]
After clicking on "No", because I know that no license is available, EA forgets that it had a "corporate floating" license configured previously.
When I "restart" EA afterwards the "License Management" dialog window appears where I can add or remove license keys.
In that dialog no license key is mentioned.

Can anybody confirm this behavior?
Why does EA forget about which license it has been configured?
Any idea how to prevent that EA forgets which license has been configured?

If anybody can confirm this I will report this as bug, as this is really annoying.
Many thanks.

Yes, I saw that behavior as well. I assume there is no sense making explanation about that. It’s just a bug.

Hi

I have seen this behavior several time and it happens when the server where the Keystore resides looses connectivity or is down.
How it works is when you load EA looks for the licenses and then EA starts.

Check with your NW Admin or if the Keystore resides on MS SQL, check with your DBAdmin.

Best regards

I am the admin 8) and you are right.
The same behavior can be observed, when no network connection to the keystore server is present when starting EA.

So we have "license dementia" when:
  • license server is accessible, but no license is available as all licenses are checked-out
  • license server is not accessible when starting EA

This is buggy from my point of view.
Do you sent a bug report to Sparx?
Best regards,

I sent a detailed report about 1 hour ago (2:15 pm CEST) using the web form.
I am really curious about what happens now :).

Tomorrow (it is the middle of the night down under where Sparxians live) you'll get a polite email that says they will investigate the behavior.

Then typically you don't hear anything anymore until a few days/weeks/months after they have released the fix. Wich might be in weeks/months/years/... from now. :-\

There is one other mail you get back, that either confirms the bug or not.
If it is confirmed you get a bug number back but then unfortunately the unpredictable procedure as described by Greet starts.

I cannot imagine that any EA customer ("The customer is always right."!!!????) likes that, but that is how it goes. :'(

I always imagine it to be very Boosh-like; the support guys are Vince and Howard and when the confirm they bug they have to go and convince Naboo the fix needs to make it into to the dev pipeline.  And there's a man in a Gorilla suit; probably one of the Sparxians who post here

Hello,

If you use older version of Enterprise Architect and the issue is the same as I think, the issue is fixed on the latest build.

HTH,

@All
Do I hear some sarcasm in your posts :)?
Or at least a bit of irony or desperation?

No reaction on bug report so far.

@T Kouno
We have this issue in build 1229 (which is latest today) and in all builds back to EA 7.5. So definitely not fixed :(.
